At what times are blood samples taken?

Answer

As patients should ideally fast before being tested, most of our blood sample taking centres open at 7 a.m. We recommend that you avoid drinking water between rising and when the blood sample is taken.

Levels of certain blood components measured change according to the time of day. These are said to be subject to a circadian rhythm. This is why, irrespective of whether you need to fast or not, you may be asked to attend in the morning for a blood sample to be taken. This is also why your doctor might sometimes specify the time(s) at which he wants the blood to be taken.

If results are urgently required, the analyses will have to be carried out as quickly as possible irrespective of whether the patient has fasted or not.

Finally, virtually all blood samples are taken in the morning on an empty stomach. However, for emergencies and in special cases, we are open every afternoon at: Luxembourg train station (24, rue Glesener), Esch-sur-Alzette train station (52, boulevard J.-F. Kennedy), Ettelbrück (26-30, bd J.-F. Kennedy), Luxembourg-Centre (8, rue Notre Dame), Luxemburg-Kirchberg (15, rue Edward Steichen) and at our technical support centre in Esch-sur-Alzette (37, rue Romain Fandel).
